Axedale Community Garden

Axedale, Greater Bendigo

Tell us about yourself and what you grow

Axedale Community Garden is grown by the community, for the community! No need to become a member or buy a plot. We meet once a month for a working bee (first Saturday of the month), but our produce grows all year round. We have 7 large wicking beds and have come to learn we are good at growing potatoes, tomatoes, broad beans, all types of greens/herbs, garlic and other goodies! We have a crack at anything! We encourage the community to come and pick/harvest enough for themselves/families when they wish to, help yourself, being mindful to take only what you use and then it can grow on.

What is currently in season?

Tomatoes!!! Lots of them, different varieties too.
Silverbeet, lettuce, zucchinis, plenty of herbs (parsley, thyme, chives, rosemary)

Do you stock your produce anywhere in the region?

The produce is for anyone in our community. We do share with Axedale Foodshare as well.

What’s your favourite recipe using your own produce?

Pickled Green Tomatoes

This Baked Zucchini is beautiful too, we often don't use pomegranate though, not in season here yet. Sometimes frozen pomegranate pearls from the winter. But cherries work great!

We love a pesto too, often using our silverbeet and basil

We often have green tomatoes that haven't ripened and this was a bloody beauty!

Is there anything else you would like to share about your business?

We love volunteers, anyone is welcome - we meet 9.30am first Saturday of the month. Our garden is behind the Uniting Church, on the main road, opposite the Axedale Primary School. The garden is always open though to pick some goodies and enjoy the space.
